Caysen Allison faces up to 10 years in prison following a recent ruling by a Bell County judge.
BELTON, Texas — A man convicted of stabbing a Belton High School student to death in 2022 will have to wait a little longer to learn his fate.
Caysen Allison was convicted of criminally negligent homicide by a jury in April following the death of fellow student Joe Ramirez at Belton High School.
Allison was scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, but it was pushed back to June 23 during a hearing on Friday. Initially, Allison faced 6 months to 2 years at a state jail facility after his conviction.
However, the court later heard arguments about the possibility of adding a deadly weapon enhancement to Allison’s charges.
A judge later found that a deadly weapon was used or exhibited during the incident, which expanded the maximum sentence for Allison. He now faces between two to 10 years in prison for Ramirez’s death.
Background on the Caysen Allison trial
On the morning of May 3, 2022, a fight broke out between Allison and Ramirez in a bathroom at Belton High School.
After the stabbing happened, Allison — who was 18-years-old at the time — left the school, which led to the campus being placed on a precautionary lockdown.
Allison was later arrested off campus while Ramirez was taken to the hospital, where he would later die.
During the trial, a witness testified about the tense relationship between Allison and Ramirez, even stating that Ramirez pulled a gun on Allison following a prom after party.
Ramirez’s ex-girlfriend also stated that the fight was supposed to happen off campus and that Allison admitted to wanting Ramirez “on life support.”
