Several students hospitalized after Southwest ISD bus overturns on Loop 410

Emergency crews said students were able to evacuate the bus through the rear exit and emergency roof hatches.

SAN ANTONIO — A terrifying morning commute to school sent several students to the hospital after a Southwest Independent School District bus overturned Tuesday on Loop 410 near Old Pearsall Road.

University Hospital officials said four of the five students hospitalized are in good condition. A fifth patient, transferred from another medical facility, is listed in fair condition.

The crash happened when a school bus carrying 33 students overturned, sending the bus driver and five students to the hospital.

SAPD says students were able to evacuate the bus through the rear exit.

“It seems like he veered or hit the curb as it was about to hit the highway,” one witness said. “It landed on its side, it skid. The juveniles, the students were able to get out safely.”

Southwest ISD confirmed the school bus was not equipped with seatbelts.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. KENS 5 will continue to follow the story as more details become available.
