Severe storms bring reported tornado, large hail to areas west of San Antonio

Communities west of San Antonio woke up to damage Wednesday after overnight storms brought a reported tornado and large hail to parts of South Texas.

LEAKEY, Texas — Communities west of San Antonio are cleaning up after a rough night of severe weather that brought a reported tornado, damaging hail and strong storms across parts of South Texas.

Storms moved through the region late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, bringing dangerous weather to several counties west of San Antonio.

Officials reported a tornado touchdown in Kinney County, while residents near Leakey experienced several powerful hailstorms.

Some of the hail reported near Leakey was described as grapefruit-sized, large enough to damage vehicles, roofs and windows.

The storms are part of a system that meteorologists had warned could bring multiple severe weather threats, including hail, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

As daylight arrives, crews and residents across the area are expected to begin assessing damage and cleaning up debris left behind by the overnight storms.

Meanwhile, KENS 5 crews are on the road gathering a closer look at conditions.

Reporter Rania Kaur traveled in the KENS 5 Weather Tracker toward Leakey to survey the damage and conditions following the storms.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation and are reminding residents to stay alert for changing weather conditions and watch for storm debris on roadways as cleanup begins.
