‘She deserves her life still’ | Search continues for driver involved in deadly gas station hit-and-run

The 75-year-old victim has been identified by the medical examiner as Cynthia Lamar Anthony.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a woman at a gas station Sunday.

The 75-year-old victim has been identified by the medical examiner as Cynthia Lamar Anthony. Friends and acquaintances who knew her say they are devastated and demanding justice.

Matthew Mitchell, who works at a restaurant across from the gas station on Babcock Road near Wurzbach Road, said Anthony was experiencing homelessness but always radiated joy.

“What happened to her is not acceptable,” Mitchell said. “People need to be held accountable.”

Stephen Henderson, who also struggles with homelessness, said Anthony would often look out for others.

“I can’t believe it, man. Last time I saw her was right here by McDonald’s,” Henderson said.

Nearby barber Lewis Klinger echoed those sentiments.

“She was definitely one of the ones who never did anything wrong, you know? So, it’s just a big tragedy,” Klinger said.

The crash was caught on the gas station’s surveillance camera. In video obtained by KENS 5, a silver SUV is seen striking Anthony, then circling back and driving past her.

In a separate video recorded after the crash, a silver SUV is shown parking at a gas pump. A woman steps out, walks toward the area where Anthony was hit, then goes inside the convenience store to alert a clerk.

The clerk told KENS 5 the woman said someone was passed out outside, then left before police arrived. SAPD has not confirmed whether the SUV in the second video is the same vehicle involved in the crash.

“She didn’t get the respect she deserved,” Mitchell said.

Anthony was also well known at the Bob Ross Senior Center, which she had frequented for the past 15 years. In a statement, a spokesperson for the center said:
“She was a very smart and active woman who sang at events and was kind to all. Her impact was great and she will be dearly missed.”

“She deserves her life still,” Klinger added. “She deserves to still be here, but she’s gone now.”

Police say the suspect vehicle is a 2010 Nissan Murano. They are urging anyone with information about the crime to come forward.
