Investigators say Krystal Calvillo was hit and killed by a car while she went to help her boyfriend, who was also hit.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Two people were hit by cars and killed while riding their bikes along Veterans Memorial near Fallbrook in northwest Harris County late Tuesday night. One of the victims was Krystal Calvillo. We’re now hearing from her family.
They say in the end, Krystal showed her true character. She lost her life trying to save her boyfriend who’d been hit first.
The somber return to Veterans Memorial Drive was a chance for the Calvillo family to get a better understanding of what happened to Krystal and her boyfriend, Daniel Perez, Tuesday night.
“I feel heartbroken for my parents, but especially for my niece and nephew,” said Krystal’s sister Alexis. “Because now they’re going to grow up without a mom.”
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says the pair were riding their bikes around 11 p.m. Tuesday when a car hit Daniel. That driver stopped and Krystal, who had been riding her own bike, went to help him. Authorities say that’s when another car hit Krystal and Daniel, but it never stopped.

“The person that is responsible to turn themselves in, to do the right thing, to know what they did,” said Krystal’s mother Jeannette Calvillo. “They killed a mom that has two kids that are going to have to grow up without a mom now.”
The posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour, but people like Ricky Hamid say it’s not followed. Especially at night, when there is little light.
“We were just closing up, basically and all I heard was like two big booms,” he said.
Hamid says accidents are common but nothing this tragic.
“You gotta just slow down,” he said. “People are on bikes over here. There’s no bike lanes.”
As for the driver who didn’t stop, the Calvillos say all they had to do was stop and show some humanity and render aid. They say Krystal did more.
“She died trying to help someone,” Alexis said. “So, like I told my niece and nephew, she died a hero. She literally sacrificed her life to attempt to help somebody. That was Krystal,. She had a big heart.”
The family has created a GoFundMe to support unexpected funeral costs and to assist her children.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information to call them at 713-221-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
