HOUSTON — Dozens gathered Wednesday night at the spot where an eight-year-old girl lost her life earlier this week.
On Monday, Feb. 24, Emanuela Aifuwa was crossing the street after getting off an Alief ISD school bus when she was hit and killed by a car. Officials are calling it “a tragic accident.”
Behind a tree, lined with a sea of balloons and candles, you could see people praying and standing together to pay tribute to the child.
“[Emanuela was] vibrant, full of life. She’s good and happy,” Suzy Oriakhi said about her daughter. “My love. She is my heart.”
The Alief ISD second grader’s aunt, Esther Oriakhi, provided KHOU 11 News with a video of Emanuela helping her mom in their kitchen. Her family said she was always taking care of her mother and had big dreams.
“The dreams of being a doctor to take care of mommy, they’re all gone,” Suzy Oriakhi said.
Some of the tributes paid homage to Emanuela’s favorite things, such as Barbie, Sonic the Hedgehog and her favorite colors, pink and blue.
Alief ISD representatives were also present at the vigil Wednesday night. Horn Elementary School Assistant Principal Jenice Kennedy said their focus is really on giving Emanuela’s friends and loved ones the support they need.
“Our whole counseling department came in and spoke with the students,” Kennedy said.
She also said there was counseling available for staff. Other district officials came to assist with duties to give teachers moments to mourn or speak with someone if needed.
Kennedy said support will be available as students and staff mourn Emanuela.
“Everyone loved her. Like I said she was well respected and liked by her classmates,” Kennedy said.
A GoFundMe has been set up to support Emanuela’s funeral expenses and family.
