SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are searching for whoever shot and killed a 24-year-old woman while she was driving home from work Saturday afternoon.
Her grandmother, Alma Hernandez spoke out days after her death, in hopes of encouraging any witnesses to come forward.
“She was coming home from work when it happened, like I said she was out there working so who would have thought?,” Hernandez said.
Investigators identified the victim as Ghabriella Barrera. According to the police report, Barrera was traveling on General Hudnell near Kirk Place when she was shot at several times. Multiple bullet holes were found on the side of her vehicle.
The report states multiple people witnessed Barrera crash into a guardrail. However, it is unclear If anyone witnessed the actual shooting.
“Whoever did it, not even to think you could hurt somebody else,” Hernandez said. “I know they were after her, but had you hurt somebody else along the way to just shoot like that, it’s crazy.”
Barrera was rushed to the hospital where she died. Hernandez said initially they thought it could have been a road rage incident, but they have since learned it was a targeted attack. However, the motive behind the attack is still unknown.
“People like that don’t deserve to be free, even if you’re mad at somebody, why are you going to go out there and take their life?” Hernandez said.
Hernandez said her granddaughter was outgoing, independent and an animal lover.
“She’d always dreamed about getting property and opening up a rescue place for pit bulls,” Hernandez said.
She added, the day Barrera was killed, she was planning on rehoming an abused dog she had recently rescued.
“She loved her pit bulls,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez said she hopes her granddaughter can be remembered for being a caring person.
“She was so young, she was living life, trying to do the best she could do,” Hernandez said.
