‘She will now rest in our hearts’ | San Antonio woman killed in 18-wheeler rollover accident after colliding with deputy patrol unit

“Casandra was the most precious person, her heart, always smiling, always cheerful, positive no matter what,” said Isabel Farias, Casandra’s Grandmother.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio woman died when she lost control of her 18-wheeler.  The tractor trailer then careened into an Hidalgo County Deputy patrol unit, then rolled over.

The family of 25 year-old Casandra Chavez-Martinez say they are still in shock by her sudden death.  Saturday morning, they held a balloon release in her honor.

“Cassandra was like the most precious Person, her heart, always smiling, always cheerful, positive no matter what,” said Isabel Farias, Casandra’s Grandmother.

The family came together along with friends and co-workers to mourn, honor and remember her.

“A sweet bubbly, bubbly, funny, just really genuine.  Very genuine and positive and, just loving, just such a loving little girl, caring person,” said Farias.

Authorities say Casandra was driving an 18-wheeler on Thursday afternoon around 4:30 p.m., and was heading back home from the Rio Grande Valley on 281 North near Edinburg.

DPS troopers say she lost control and side swiped a Hidalgo County Patrol Unit that was on the shoulder lane, dragging it a short distance.

Troopers say the 18-wheeler went into the grassy area of the highway and rolled over, partially ejecting her.  Family says the truck landed on her.

“It was the most horrible experience, so far because of the way she passed away, was something we will never ever forget,” said Farias.

Farias says she recalls getting the call from Casandra’s mother that she was gone.

“Everybody’s in shock, her dad, her mom. My brothers just in shock, everybody.  We can’t even begin to believe that this has happened to that young girl, young, beautiful girl,” said Farias.

Farias says Casandra was a Holmes High School graduate, participated in ROTC and wanted to succeed in life.

Farias says Casandra was a hard worker who had just moved into a new apartment with best friends and had just brought a truck, which has now become a memorial.

“She had made a TikTok, that now she has an adult responsibilities, no more playing around,” said Farias.

The family is now left having to plan Casandra’s funeral.  To help with burial cost, the family has started a GoFundMe.  They say and donations are appreciated.

As the family mourns Casandra’s passing, they say she will always be loved and remembered in their now broken hearts.

“She will be now rest in our hearts forever and resting in peace,” said Farias.

DPS Troopers say they are continuing to investigate the crash.  They also say the deputy suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be ok.
