Sheriff: Former Bexar County deputy accused of Whataburger run for inmate ‘will stay fired’

The former deputy was still in his one-year probationary period when the incident occurred.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A former Bexar County deputy accused of accepting money from an inmate’s family to buy Whataburger will not be reinstated, even after the criminal charge against him was dismissed, according to Sheriff Javier Salazar.

Miguel Angel Rodriguez, 27, was arrested after investigators said he admitted to taking a Cash App payment from an inmate’s relative to bring food from Whataburger for the inmate.

Rodriguez, who joined the department in September 2024, was still in his one-year probationary period when the incident occurred. He was immediately fired from his position at the Adult Detention Center after admitting to the violation.

According to online court records, the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office dismissed the contraband in a correctional facility charge on Nov. 7. Despite the dismissal, Sheriff Salazar said the department’s decision to terminate Rodriguez will not change.

“I can’t speculate as to why the District Attorney chose to dismiss charges on such egregious behavior, but I consider this man’s conduct inexcusable, and I have no interest in hiring him back. He will stay fired.”
