Sheriff identifies man who died in Dec. 30 plane crash in Fredericksburg

The National Transportation Safety Board, a federal agency, is investigating the fatal crash.

SAN ANTONIO — The man who died when a small plane went down in a rural area of Fredericksburg over the holiday season was identified as Gillespie County resident Richard Bills, according to Sheriff Chris Ayala.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said it was investigating the crash, which involved a small Lancair Legacy plane that crashed along a segment of Keese Sagebiel Road around 4 p.m. on Dec. 30, officials previously said.

“Upon arrival, crews located a single aircraft down and fully engulfed in flames within heavy brush,” local officials shared on social media.

It’s unknown at this point if Bills was the sole person on the plane when it crashed. Lancair Legacy aircraft are two-seat, single-engine planes that weigh around 2,200 pounds and can cruise at speeds of up to 276 mph.
