Sheriff Salazar: Baby was ‘happy and healthy’ in days leading up to death at Bexar County daycare

First responders performed CPR for almost an hour before the 4-month-old lost her life.

POTEET, Texas — Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said employees at a southeast-side daycare appeared to do everything right when they laid a 4-month-old baby to sleep before she died Wednesday, saying there were “no toys, no blankets, nothing that could cause suffocation.”

The county medical examiner has yet to determine a cause and manner of death for Laurelin Deluna, who was found not breathing at Kid Kountry Early Learning Center around 2:45 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, as did medical personnel who performed CPR for nearly an hour to try and revive her, officials at the scene said.

Baby Laurelin, who was born March 18, was pronounced dead at the scene despite their efforts.

“All we know at this point is, we don’t have a cause of death yet,” Salazar said Thursday afternoon.

The sheriff added the 4-month-old baby “had been ill” in recent days, but was taking Tylenol, which is safe for young children.

“By all indications by the parents and the daycare workers, she was happy and healthy until they put her down and they found her deceased,” Salazar said.

Investigators on Wednesday said they didn’t see obvious signs of injury, adding they would handle the death “as a crime until we know anything different.”
