Sheriff: Suspect arrested after Eagle Pass casino shooting leaves 2 killed, several others hurt

Gunfire erupted shortly before midnight Saturday at Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino, officials said. A 34-year-old San Antonio man is in custody.

SAN ANTONIO — Two people are dead and several others injured in a shooting that broke out overnight in the parking lot of the popular Kickapoo Casino in Eagle Pass, Texas, according to the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Tom Schmerber said the alleged shooter – identified by authorities as 34-year-old Keyran Jones of San Antonio – was arrested hours later in Wilson County. He faces two counts of capital murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Eagle Pass Mayor Aaron Valdez wrote on Facebook he was “deeply saddened by the tragic events” at the casino. He identified one of the victims as Marcus “Mark” Antley, a prominent community member and retired U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent.

“Mr. Antley dedicated much of his life to public service and law enforcement. He will be remembered not only for his career but also for his generosity, leadership, and the lasting friendships he built throughout Eagle Pass and the region,” Valdez wrote. “His passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of many. Our prayers also remain with the other individual who lost their life and with all those who were injured during this tragedy.”

According to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS troopers attempted to pull Jones over in Wilson County, east of San Antonio. A pursuit ensued in which troopers discharged their weapons.

Despite partially disabling the vehicle, officials said, the suspect continued to flee. Troopers and Wilson County sheriff’s deputies continued to pursue, eventually taking him into custody in the 10000 block of FM 1347, near Stockdale. A weapon was also recovered.

Arrangements are currently being made to extradite him back to Maverick County.

It’s unknown at this point what led up to the shooting. But images that started flooding social media around midnight show what appeared to be a heavy law enforcement presence at the casino. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded, including tribal police and Eagle Pass police officers.

Maverick County Judge Ramsey English Cantu initially shared news of the shooting on his Facebook page shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, writing that “it pains me deeply to see these horrific acts of violence occurring in our home. He posted again a few hours later stating that two people were killed in the “heinous act.”
