Shy one-year-old Shepherd and Terrier mix named Shadow has never had his own home | Forgotten Friends

He was found as a stray when he was a puppy and has been at the Canyon Lake shelter pretty much his whole life, just waiting for someone to choose him to love.

CANYON LAKE, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week’s Forgotten Friend is a shy, one-year-old Shepherd and Terrier mix named Shadow that was pulled from another shelter more nine months ago by the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society (CLASS). The shelter was overcrowded so he was facing certain death until CLASS stepped in. Sadly, he has never known a life outside of an animal shelter.

“Rescued alongside his sister, Star, from a high-risk facility nine months ago as young puppies, Shadow has always been the quieter, more reserved sibling,” said shelter staff. “From the very beginning, he sought comfort and security in his sister, often hiding behind her as he cautiously observed his surroundings… hence the fitting name, Shadow.”

CLASS saved him from the Guadalupe County Animal Control, along with his sister, back on April, 4, 2024. They were both on the euthanasia list when CLASS stepped in to help.

“His looks reflect his soft spirit and radiates a warmth that draws you in,” said shelter staff. “Shadow’s sleek black coat shimmers in the sunlight, his ears are perked up with endearing curiosity, and his warm brown eyes reveal a world of affection for those patient enough to earn his trust. Though his happy smiles are reserved for those he knows well, they’re worth every bit of the wait. Often, he quietly retreats to the back of his house, blending into the shadows so effortlessly that he’s easy to overlook—living up to his name all too well.”

Shadow gets along great with other dogs, but might be a little afraid of cats.

“Shadow is a one of a kind pup with a gentle, delicate heart and soul,” said Stacie Shmidl, CLASS. “With his love for canine companionship, Shadow would thrive in a home with an outgoing and playful dog to show him the ropes and help him feel more comfortable, not to mention having a friend to play with and burn off energy.”

And he has never met a dog he didn’t like, no matter their size or play type.

Shadow is a little bit shy and nervous at first, so a calm home with older kids would be his ideal situation. One of his favorite things to do is just relax on a couch, or maybe go for a quiet walk.

He hasn’t shown escape behaviors, but a secure privacy fence is recommended to provide an extra layer of security as he adjusts to a new environment.

“For Shadow, a peaceful home is essential,” said Stacie. “A place where he can truly relax and build confidence. With his sensitivity to loud noises and new experiences, a household without young children is best.”

Like most dogs, he loves treats. In fact, that’s probably the best way to get him to be comfortable around you. But once his comfort level has increased, he loves to get loving pets and cuddles.

“A volunteer took him home for a few days during the cold weather and says he slept peacefully in his kennel all night, and was polite to the resident dogs,” said Stacie. “He even found a cozy spot to lay down and watch everything as he settled in, and enjoyed lounging around on the couch.”

Shadow is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, heartworm negative and on monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention. The only thing he needs is someone to love!

Beneath his timid exterior lies a tender soul, patiently waiting for a chance to blossom in a home that can offer him the love and understanding he so desperately deserves.

If you’re ready to give him the chance to step out of his comfort zone, and out of the shadows, this sweet boy is waiting to meet you.
