Silvia Corado wins KENS 5 EXCEL Award for San Antonio ISD

Graebner Elementary School teacher, Silvia Corado, was surprised with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award and a $2,000 check from our partner, Credit Human.

SAN ANTONIO — A passion for teaching is something that can’t be taught in school.

One San Antonio ISD teacher found her passion in teaching duo language pre-K at Graebner Elementary School on the city’s south side.

There were big cheers and and even some tears at Graebner Elementary where we presented pre-K duo language teacher Silvia Corado with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award.

In partnership with Credit Human, Corado was surprised with a $2,000 check for her excellence in education.

Corado has been a standout teacher for years, even winning the district’s teacher of the year award last school year.

“Thank you so very much. [The kids] are the winners. The parents and the children are the winners. They are my evidence of what I am doing here through these years,” said Corado.

Corado’s start in teaching didn’t come as naturally as it does for some educators. She was born in Guatemala and given up by her parents at birth. At just 8-months-old, she was sent to live at a convent.

Once through school, the only job she was allowed to take on was to become a teacher, just like the nuns that taught her.

But she embraced her job and the children and families she interacts with. Corado says they all have become her passion over the years.

“Ms. Corado is truly a teacher of teachers, right? She has grown many generations of students here to become dual language learners. We have monolingual,  that are in this classroom that have never learned any Spanish and they come out reading, speaking and confident in themselves,” said Veronica Rodriguez, assistant principal at Graebner Elementary.

Her students also sing her praises.

“I love Ms. Corado so much. She’s a great teacher because she helped me when I was in pre-K 4,” said student Jose Bustos. “I learned how to write and read with her.”

Being the caring teacher that she is, Corado plans to put it back into her students.

Each year, she makes Christmas gifts for her class that include a new blanket and a few other items.

She says the gift from Credit Human is coming at the perfect time so she can start preparing for the holidays.
