Sinton baseball player helps save possessions before Welder Fire burned down brother’s home

Adrian DeAses said he will continue to support his brother through the challenges after the fire.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It has been almost two weeks since fires left many without a home in Sinton.

The Welder Fire burned down several houses on Hamilton Street, including the home of a Sinton baseball player’s brother.

Adrian DeAses plays for the Sinton Pirates just like his older brother Cason DeAses did. Before the Welder Fire got to his brother’s home, he went there with his dad to save what they could.

Cason DeAses had just moved into a house on Hamilton Street with his wife and two daughters about a month ago. He recalled contacting his family the day of the fire to make sure they were not in the house.

“Everybody was safe, and I told my parents, “Hey, just don’t worry about anything, everything can be replaced, it’s just items. I’m just glad nobody got hurt,” Cason DeAses said.

They had just remodeled their home and were there for only a few nights before the fire. He said it hurt to see his home burned down but is blessed that his family, friends and community supported him after the tragedy.

“Coming back here, it’s just, it takes a little toll on us, me and my family, knowing that trying to tell our daughters like, “Hey, this is not a house, but we will rebuild,” Cason DeAses said.

Cason DeAses was at work when he found out flames were close to his home. His younger brother Adrian DeAses and their dad saved possessions from inside, including items from the safe and clothes. Adrian said he will continue to support his brother through the challenges after the fire.

“I’ve told my brother since I could speak that I’m going to be with him until the day that I die,” Adrian DeAses said. “So, whatever he needs or whatever he wants I’m going to try to do as much as I can to be there for him.”

Both brothers played baseball for the Sinton Pirates under head coach Adrian Alaniz. Adrian DeAses is finishing his senior year and Cason DeAses graduated from Sinton High School in 2019. Cason DeAses said Alaniz taught him that baseball is like life and how to overcome adversity, which is what they will do after the fire. Adrian DeAses said he is learning those same lessons now.

“Everything that he teaches us within this diamond field is nothing but life lessons. I just try to put it to where, towards my family and my brother just to have their backs,” Adrian DeAses said.

Cason DeAses said it meant a lot to him that Adrian DeAses and their dad tried to salvage what they could from his home. He said his family plans to stay in Sinton and rebuild, making memories in a new home.
