Sister of 14-year-old boy shot, killed in San Antonio speaks on gun violence that took brother’s life

On April 16, police say the teen was ambushed and fatally shot while he was walking home from Brewer Academy where he was a student.

SAN ANTONIO — It’s been more than a week and still no arrests have been made in the murder of 14-year-old Simon Cuevas III. Police say he was attacked by at least seven other classmates at Brewer Academy before being shot.

His sister, who we’re not naming due to threats made against their family, wants to spread awareness. She says the violence in San Antonio, that took her brother’s life, must come to an end.

“My brother didn’t deserve that,” she said. “No one deserves it. Someone told me ‘Oh, he was talking a lot of stuff online so he deserved it.’ I’m like no one deserves that.”

It was Wednesday, April 16, when police say the teen was ambushed and shot dead in west San Antonio while he was walking home from Brewer Academy where he was a student.

“People think that this is ok,” she said. “They think this is a normal thing to happen, and it’s not. And I just want to do something to make that change.”

Police said they have not confirmed whether the gun used to kill Simon had been on the school’s campus that day. San Antonio ISD police said metal detectors aren’t on campus, but every student is patted down at the beginning of the day.

SAISD police said they’ve increased their presence in and around the campus.

“Either schools need more security, or parents need to watch what their kids have – check their rooms, anything,” Cuevas’s sister said.

She says, to her knowledge, her brother was not the victim of bullying and the family still doesn’t know why he was ambushed.

“He was really funny honestly, like everyone says he was a really funny boy,” she said. “There were times when I could not stop laughing. He was a jokester honestly. He should have been able to do what he wanted in his future, like that shouldn’t have been taken from him.”
