Sixers 133, Spurs 123: What they said after the game

Sixers’ Joel Embiid records a career-high 70 points as Philadelphia hands the Spurs a road loss.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs could not pick up a road win, losing against the Sixers 133-123.

The Spurs had six players in double-figure scoring and made 13 three-point shots. However, it was not enough as Sixers’ Joel Embiid scored a Sixers’ franchise record 70 points.

Victor Wembanyama recorded 33 points and seven rebounds. Jeremy Sochan had 14 points and eight rebounds. Keldon Johnson added eight points and two rebounds off the bench. Devin Vassell recorded 22 points in the loss, while Tre Jones added 12 points and six assists before exiting the game with an apparent ankle injury.

The Spurs are 8-35 on the season and will next host the Thunder on Wednesday night for the first game of a seven-game homestand.

Here’s a sample of what the teams said after the game.

Coach Gregg Popovich:

“I thought we were great. We’re playing a team that’s trying to win a championship. We gave everything we had to give. That’s the most important part: you keep playing and learning. Obviously, we’re not going to be able to play these guys the way we would play if we were also a championship ball club. But given the fact these guys are just learning how to play with each other, as young as they are, I got to love what they did out there.”

Wembanyama:

“There’s just sometimes you got to make those sacrifices and even sometimes try to contest the shot even though it’s almost desperate. When I was thinking about it, about not fouling, I managed to not foul. But sometimes it’s just playing five, six, seven minutes in a row and being tired, it becomes hard to not foul sometimes. “

“He’s (Embiid) unstoppable. I mean we tried boxing him out, tried sending doubles, tried putting different people on him. I mean he’s MVP for a reason. It was tough. Tough matchup. “
