SAN ANTONIO — Nearly a month after they downed Frisco Lone Star in Arlington and won another state title in football, the Smithson Valley Rangers are finally getting ready to celebrate their victory back home.
Comal ISD said in a press release that the community was invited to a rally scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, where fans will be able to meet members of the football team as longtime head coach Larry Hill recaps a memorable championship game. It’ll be held at Ranger Stadium in Spring Branch.
Smithson Valley beat Frisco Lone Star 28-6 in Class 5A-DI Championship Game on Dec. 19, capping a remarkable playoff run that saw the Rangers scoring 32.7 points per game while giving up just eight across six matchups. Three times they blanked opponents in the playoff run.
Their toughest task came in the semifinal matchup, which saw the Rangers down 21-7 to Port Arthur Memorial before mounting a comeback and eventually advancing with a 31-28 victory.
Smithson Valley, having never won the state championship before the 2024 season, has now come home with the trophy in back-to-back years. They went 15-1 in their most recent championship season.
Don’t worry if you haven’t gotten your championship T-shirt or hat to wear to the rally; the district says gear will be available to buy at the event.
