COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The Coeur d’Alene Police Department is investigating an unusual incident involving a 16-year-old girl and a man dressed as a snowman at The Shops in downtown Coeur d’Alene.
According to police, the incident occurred on December 19, when officers responded to a report of battery at the downtown shopping area. Police say the victim was visiting The Shops with her friends when she encountered the snowman mascot, who was employed by Lake CDA Cruise.
In a press release, CDA Police said the teenager had a severe fear of mascots and became visibly distressed as the snowman approached her with open arms. Despite her attempts to avoid contact by backing against a wall and shaking her head, the man in the snowman costume hugged her before turning toward her fleeing friends.
One of the victim’s friends tripped while running away and struck her head. Medical personnel evaluated the person on-site and determined she did not require further medical attention.
Officers reviewed surveillance footage, which showed the snowman mascot interacting with other patrons, including children and adults, in what appeared to be a friendly and non-threatening manner before the incident.
The victim’s parents were informed of the situation but were undecided about pressing charges for battery. Police have identified and interviewed the suspect to ensure all necessary information is available if the victim decides to pursue legal action in the future.
Authorities have emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the community. The investigation remains open, and the Coeur d’Alene Police Department continues to monitor the case.
