Softball community rallies behind family devastated by deadly wrong-way I-45 wreck

The Munive family expressed gratitude for community support after a wrong-way crash killed Brittany and DJ.

HOUSTON — A family who lost two members in a devastating wrong-way crash in late March is expressing gratitude for the outpouring of community support, particularly from the local softball community.

The Munive family suffered unimaginable tragedy when a red F-150 pickup truck slammed into their SUV on I-45, killing mother Brittany and son DJ, while leaving father Dario and daughter Mila injured. Police have charged the alleged driver of the F-150 with multiple counts of intoxication manslaughter.

“Overall it’s just a charitable event to continue to assist financially. They have an army behind them so it’s a beautiful, beautiful thing to see that not only is it a family presence but the community as well,” Mario Munive, a cousin of the family, told KHOU 11 on Friday.

According to Mario, Mila’s softball team has been supporting the family since the accident occurred. The team initiated a GoFundMe campaign and organized multiple fundraisers to help with mounting medical bills.

This weekend, a benefit softball tournament in Mila’s honor is being held at El Franco Lee Park. The event runs Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mario credited Jessica and Jasmine Munive with leading organizational efforts for the tournament, with significant support from Pete Guzman with Southbelt Girls Softball and Eli Garza with Pasadena Girls Softball.

For those unable to attend but wishing to support the family, two verified GoFundMe campaigns have been established to help with medical expenses. One was created by Mila’s softball team, while the other was set up by the Munive family directly.

The tragic incident has highlighted the strength of community bonds, as neighbors, friends, and fellow athletes have come together to support the surviving family members through their difficult recovery journey.
