Sure you’re excited for another school year, but too much information could put your child in danger.
HOUSTON — As school campuses reopen and kids enter their new classrooms, parents need to be thoughtful about the information they’re sharing in those back-to-school posts.
“Stranger danger, how I used to always get told that in schools,” said Deputy Mark Jones with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. “Now, more so, that danger is online.”
Deputy Jones said that potential danger increases with how much of your child’s information you share online.
“We are oblivious to the dangers that we put with our kids having all the information on there, such as their grade their age, and sometimes in what school they’re going to. It’s not hard to find that name, put that in there to find that student or even find you as well.”
He says predators and bad actors could also use that information to build a bond with your children.
“It only takes that short bit of information to connect a bad connection that you don’t want or anybody wants,” he said.
Deputy Jones has simple advice for parents.
“The less information, the better,” he said.
