Confusion and fear was shared by families across the apartment complex Wednesday night as they heard a gunfight between a suspect and police.
SAN ANTONIO — The Sonterra Heights Apartment shooting wounded seven officers and has disrupted residents’ sense of safety.
One man barricaded inside his apartment with his mother when the gunfight started.
Resident Joseph Loredo says he saw the suspect Brandon Poulos start shooting.
“At first, I was like, what’s going on because it’s a quiet community,” Loredo said. “By the time I came out one of the SAPD officers was already on the ground and he had been shot.”
That officer – one of seven that was wounded in Wednesday night’s gunfight.
“They were aiding him by the time I was already outside witnessing everything,” he said. “I saw that they put a tourniquet on him. They got him out of there pretty quick.”
Loredo warned his mother to go back inside the apartment for cover.
“It sounded more like a rifle, because it was like fast,” he said. “Back-to-back shots, and then the officers returned fire. The residents that actually live here were saying that they barricaded themselves as well. In like their closets, their restrooms.”
Now that Poulos is dead – Loredo is hopeful this once quiet community will return back to normal.
“I just feel more sorry for the families that had to go through it all last night. And the officers.”
