South Texas deputy hospitalized after hit-and-run involving suspect out on bond

Authorities say Abel Pena, of Pleasanton, fled the scene of the crash Tuesday evening.

ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas — A 44-year-old Pleasanton man out on bond for prior crimes faces new charges after he rammed into the patrol car being driven by an Atascosa County sheriff’s deputy and took off Tuesday evening, according to authorities.

Abel Pena fled the scene after he ran a red light at Highway 16 and FM 3350 near Jourdanton, resulting in the wreck, officials said. The deputy, who hasn’t been identified, wasn’t responding to a call but had to be hospitalized “with unspecified injuries.”

“A short time later, Pleasanton police officers saw Pena driving at a high rate of speed and stopped the damaged vehicle,” the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Authorities say Pena was previously arrested in connection with a 2024 aggravated robbery case and now faces a felony charge of failure to stop and render aid with injuries. Video evidence helped investigators narrow down which car they were looking for after the crash.
