Southern Indiana high school student helps dig out neighbors from the snow

Grayson Ingram, 17, used his day off from school to make some extra money while helping out his community.

SCOTTSBURG, Ind. — Sunday’s winter storm dropped nearly a foot of snow on Scottsburg, Indiana.

Travel has become difficult for residents, with the city issuing a red alert travel advisory, meaning travel is restricted because roads are impassable. Only emergency vehicles were allowed on the roads, but that didn’t stop some residents.

School has also been canceled and one Scottsburg high school student is using the snow day as an opportunity to make some extra money while doing good for his community.

“I’m off today, so I thought I’d come out and make some money,” Grayson Ingram, 17, said.

He was out Monday morning using his Skid Steer to push the snow away from local businesses and even helped a couple of neighbors clear their driveway too.

“I mow grass in the summertime, so I enjoy being to help people out in a different way in the winter,” he said, adding that he hoped to get enough work lined up through Tuesday. But that’s far from what Brent Mulley plans to do.

“I’m sitting on my La-Z-Boy all night,” Mulley said. He was at the store picking up items for his wife with a truck bed full of snow. “That’s about 14 inches.”

Mulley drove from Austin, Indiana where he had a hard time making it to the corner store.

“I could hardly get out of my driveway,” he said. “I haven’t used my snow blower yet cause there is a layer of ice and snow and it wouldn’t do any good.”

As of noon Monday, city officials said Scott County EMA will evaluate travel conditions at 6 p.m., but in the meantime they advise residents to stay off the roads and stay warm.
