SAN ANTONIO — One of San Antonio’s most recognizable landmarks is entering a new chapter.
Southstar announced Friday that it has purchased the historic Lone Star Brewery site, a property deeply tied to generations of local families and the city’s working-class roots.
In a letter addressed to the community, Southstar President and CEO Thad Rutherford said the company hopes to honor the site’s legacy while helping shape its future.
“Our team has long dreamed of being a part of this effort — to celebrate all that Lone Star has meant to the city, and help guide its next chapter,” Rutherford wrote.
For many residents, the Lone Star Brewery is more than just a building. It’s a place filled with memories — of parents and grandparents who worked there, of children learning to swim in the nearby pool, and of family gatherings under the oak trees along the river. The site’s towering chimney stack remains one of the city’s most iconic sights.
Southstar says it plans to work alongside neighborhood groups, city leaders, and ongoing projects already taking shape nearby, including VIA Metropolitan Transit’s transit-oriented development plans, the San Antonio River Authority’s vision for the river, and the growing San Antonio Sports & Entertainment District.
Rutherford acknowledged that many San Antonians have spent years advocating for the protection and future of the Lone Star property.
“That work matters,” he said. “We will build on it, nurture it, and together create a new part of the Lone Star story.”
The company emphasized that redevelopment of the site will be complex and will require continued community input, with the goal of creating a space that reflects San Antonio’s past while serving future generations.
“We’re ready to listen, to work, and to build something our children can be proud of,” Rutherford said.
Southstar says community conversations will begin soon as plans for the site continue to take shape.
