Southwest ISD to vote on whether to close an elementary school

The district believes that keeping the campus open would not be fiscally responsible.

SAN ANTONIO — Southwest ISD Board of Trustees are expected to vote Tuesday on keeping Sky Harbour Elementary open or closing down for good.

The district’s first letter to parents proposed rezoning and boundary changes to help children have the best learning environment.

But parents have pushed back about the announcement.

Sky Harbour parents weren’t happy about the announcement because they say they felt they weren’t included in the decision-making process.

Parents emphasized how the letter discussed rezoning and boundary changes, but it didn’t mention potential school closures.

Sky Harbour is in the middle of a neighborhood on the southwest side and parents don’t want to take their kids further out to a different school.

Another concern with Sky Harbour Elementary closing was quality of education.

“I mean, the teachers, could they handle a bigger class size,” said Georgina Garcia, parent. “Do they have enough support from the districts to handle the bigger student teacher ratio?”

Southwest ISD did respond saying enrollment at Sky Harbour has remained low for some time.

The district believes that keeping the campus open would not be fiscally responsible.

If it does close, the board of trustees says the students would go to Hidden Cove Steam Academy, Indian Creek Elementary, and Juan Alvarado Elementary, which is scheduled to open next fall.

The board of trustees are expected to vote Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
