Spurs pick up the home win over the Grizzlies without Wembanyama and Castle.
SAN ANTONIO — Without Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle due to injury, the San Antonio Spurs won their second straight home game with a win against the Memphis Grizzlies, 111-101. De’Aaron Fox led the team with 26 points and three assists.
Kelly Olynyk had 10, and Keldon Johnson finished with 18. Devin Vassell scored 10, and Julian Champagnie had nine. Harrison Barnes recorded 23 points.
The Spurs are 10-4 and will next host the Hawks on Thursday night to close out their homestand.
Here’s a sample of what the Spurs and Warriors said after the game.
Mitch Johnson:
“We were trying, I think for the most part, but we got a little outside of ourselves just with our discipline, and they made us pay a few times, and I thought in the fourth quarter we had a really solid, disciplined defensive team effort that felt more connected than it did in the third quarter.”
“One thing we’re focusing on is just trying to just move the basketball, do it as a collective, see what happens, see who gets a shot. KJ (Keldon Johnson) drives, I get a wide-open three, he drives again. He gets wide open, lay up, right? It is just doing that as a collective and just trying to figure out ways, these different lineups of how we’re going to win.”
“I think the fourth quarter, in general, giving up 40 points in a quarter and third is never going to be a good thing to this score well, but we have to do better defensively. But giving up only 14 points in the fourth quarter, I think, is where we hung our hat at the end of this game. I think HB (Harrison Barnes) carried us through offensively. I think he was big for us.”
