SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs beat the Brooklyn Nets 118-107 for their home-opener behind Victor Wembanyama’s 31 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks.
Stephon Castle scored 13 points and had three assists. Devin Vassell added 16, Keldon Johnson finished with 19, and rookie Dylan Harper had 20 points and eight assists. Julian Champagnie added 13.
The Spurs are 3-0 and will next host the Raptors Monday night.
Here’s a sample of what the Spurs said after the game.
Mitch Johnson:
“They (Nets) got a lot of guys over there that Jordi (Fernández) got playing well and good basketball now they make shots. One of your shots goes in and out. Tough whistle here and there. And so that’s where we just have to continue to get more consistent.”
Wembanyama:
“I think we need a mixtape on KJ’s (Keldon Johnson) rebounds and offensive rebounds, too. He had a big putback in the first half. I love it, and for me, it is just the product of him understanding a huge thing that often gets overlooked —and a huge piece of how he can help us — and just totally buying it. So total respect to that.”
Keldon Johnson:
“I mean, honestly, I’m just doing, just playing my role, and I feel like buying into what we have here in San Antonio, and I truly feel that we could do something special here. And I always say this before the season, whatever my job is, that’s what I go to do, and whatever my role is to help my team win. And I feel like just really bind into that and knowing and trusting my teammates and knowing that I’m doing my job.”
“Just make an impact. Anyway, I can try to turn the game around, whether that’s picking someone up 94 feet getting steel or that’s passing the ball, whether that’s scoring, whatever.”
“The defensive side, and just want to help my team out however I can whether that’s playing defense, score, or ball. But today I think I kind of took that stand to be one of our main defensive guys, and just trying to speed the game up and make the game faster.”
