SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs beat the New Orleans Pelicans 120-116 in overtime on the road.
The team was led by Victor Wembanyama’s 29 points, 11 rebounds, and nine blocks before fouling out in overtime.
Stephon Castle scored 16 points and had six assists. Devin Vassell added 23, Keldon Johnson finished with eight, and rookie Dylan Harper had 13 points and three assists. Julian Champagnie added seven. Luke Kornet finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Spurs are 2-0 and will next host the Nets Sunday afternoon.
Here’s a sample of what the Spurs said after the game.
Mitch Johnson:
“He (Kornet) was probably the only guy that played a really clean game just in terms of not a lot of self-inflicted mistakes and guys made some plays, but they also were pressing in time, got a little ahead of ourselves, felt like for a little bit we were a step slow defensively, a step fast offensively. And he was just kind of steady. He was just a steady hand and he was a calming presence on both ends while also being impactful despite those guys making those mistakes.”
“I thought our guys navigated well, especially as the game went on. It takes a lot of communication ,and you have different people at times and different schemes in terms of what you want them to do defensively. And so to stay connected takes a lot of mental focus, fortitude, and communication.”
Victor Wembanyama:
“Really enjoyed it (win) once it was over. Pretty stressful, of course. Even though I trust them as much as they trust me, I was confident. I mean, whether I was on or off the court, they did a good job and they made it happen.”
“The win, I think, was great. Obviously, a lot of stuff like that. It’s what it is, but it was a good team effort. I was just stepping up at different points of the game.”
