The Spurs beat the Bulls and extended their winning streak.
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs won their third-straight game with a road win over the Chicago Bulls, 121-117. Victor Wembanyama led the team with 38 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. He is the first player in NBA history with 35-plus points, 10-plus rebounds, 5-plus assists, 5-plus blocks and 5-plus 3-pointers.
The Spurs went on a 30-13 run in the final frame to secure the win.
De’Aaron Fox had 21 points and Stephon Castle had 19 points and 11 assists. Luke Kornet added 16, Keldon Johnson finished with 10, and Harrison Barnes added seven. Devin Vassell exited the game with a migraine but had four points.
The Spurs are 8-2 and on a three-game winning streak and will next host the Warriors on Wednesday night.
Here’s a sample of what the Spurs said after the game.
Mitch Johnson:
“We had a foul to give, so we were at one point just talking about we had an opportunity, especially as the clock started to go down, just to be physical, and if you had an opportunity, it’s tough sometimes you don’t want to put guys in. It’s easy to say foul now, but they [the Bulls] were trying to get a quick shot up, and so they got one on the one play, and then later on Steph [Stephon Castle] took one.”
Wembanyama:
“We are where we want to be, of course, I wish we’d won every single game, but in the long run, we are not going to go 82-0 for sure. And what I like is that we keep each other accountable. The coaching staff keeps us accountable. So I know we are only going to keep getting better, and I’m also realistic that we haven’t played the best teams in the league yet, but we’re getting better, and we’re going to be ready when it’s time to.”
“I feel like it started with our defense. We wanted to be more aggressive on defense. I felt like we were giving up too many easy buckets. We had a lead; let them (Bulls) get back in, and they got a rhythm and took the lead. But fourth quarter I feel like we came together, got our principals together and then got some stops, got some easy buckets for Vic (Wembanyama), got him going, and then he closed it.”
“It was good to be back and good to be playing and just be on the floor with everybody. Obviously, I’d had a ton of time before then, even playing, so it was just nice to keep getting reps playing games.”
