SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks 125-92 in their season-opener, led by Victor Wembanyama’s record-breaking 40 points, 15 rebounds, and zero turnovers. It was the most points scored by a Spur on opening night.
Stephon Castle scored 22 points and had six assists. Devin Vassell added 13, Keldon Johnson finished with 11, and rookie Dylan Harper had 15 points and four rebounds. Julian Champagnie added five. Harrison Barnes ended the night with seven.
The Spurs are 1-0 and will next visit the Pelicans Friday night.
Here’s a sample of what the Spurs said after the game.
Mitch Johnson:
“I think we all knew he (Wembanyama) was going to be assertive. He’s been out eight months. He’s been waiting for this probably longer and more thoroughly than anybody else. And so you saw him take the moment and play spectacular. But honestly, the most impressive line, I’m not trying to downplay or anything, but he had zero turnovers. The amount of fundamentally sound plays he made tonight was really, really impressive.”
Victor Wembanyama:
“Attention to detail. Still glimpses of sometimes getting carried away a little bit, but much more control than I’ve seen from us in the past. Coming out of timeouts, I feel like we scored after every single timeout where we had a possession no matter who was on the court. So that was great.”
“Poise. I mean last year, your first year you don’t really know what you’re going into, but I feel like having that year under my belt kind of settled me in. I was super confident coming into this game. I was happy we played well.”
