SAN ANTONIO — Without Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle due to injury, the San Antonio Spurs won their third straight home game with a win against the Atlanta Hawks, 135-126. De’Aaron Fox led the team with 26 points and nine assists.
Kelly Olynyk had eight, and Keldon Johnson finished with 25. Devin Vassell scored 15, and Julian Champagnie had 20. Harrison Barnes recorded 16 points, and David Jones Garcia recorded 12 points and six assists.
The Spurs are 11-4 and will next visit the Suns on Thursday night.
Here’s a sample of what the Spurs and Hawks said after the game.
Mitch Johnson:
“In the fourth quarter, that group with Jeremy (Sochan), Julian (Champagnie) in that smaller lineup that you talked about, you just really did feel the defensive pressure and then it gave us an opportunity to get out and run. I don’t know if we ran one really set play there for a pretty good stretch of gameplay.”
“And when you’re able to do that, typically that means either bad things are happening or you’re able to play out of our defense. And during that stretch, there was some good defense there and we were able to turn them over a little bit and then also hit the boards, which when you play those lineups, you have to do that as a group.”
Jones Garcia:
“Doing what you’re able to do tonight and a win. I’m proud of myself. I hope my dad is proud of me as well, and I was just having fun. Yeah, a dream come true for sure.”
“We’re playing lineups that we hadn’t even practiced with or gone through training camp or preseason with. So we want to gel together as quickly as possible, and whenever we have all of our guys back wanting to do that as well. We see what can be done. Even when I was out, we were winning games.”
