Spurs 1999 championship team, original Spurs Coyote set to be inducted into the SA Sports Hall Of Fame

SAN ANTONIO — The 1999 San Antonio Spurs championship squad is set to be inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.

The team will be part of the Class of 2025 and will be honored for being the breakthrough team that vaulted the Spurs to the top of the NBA and sparked four more title runs in 2003, 2005, and 2014.

The 1999 team recorded an incredible 15-2 postseason record and finished 37-13 in the lockout-shortened season.

Led by David Robinson, a young Tim Duncan, Sean Elliott, Avery Johnson, and Steve Kerr, it culminated in a 4-1 NBA Finals series win over the Knicks. It was also a playoff run that included toppling the Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant-led Lakers, as well as the upstart Portland Trail Blazers, in the Western Conference Finals.

Joining the 1999 Spurs in the induction ceremony will be the original Coyote team mascot, Tim Derk. He wore the costume for 21 years before retiring, and the Coyote was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2007.
