It is no surprise the Coyote ranks among the top sports mascots on Instagram.
SAN ANTONIO — He is the best in the business for entertaining the home crowds at the Frost Bank Center: The San Antonio Spurs mascot, the Coyote!
The Coyote thrills crowds each home game with his trampoline dunks, hilarious skits and fan interaction in the stands or at community events.
So, it is no surprise that he ranks among the top sports mascots on Instagram.
A study by Legal Sports Report identified the top contenders by examining Instagram follower counts of team mascots in the MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL.
The Coyote ranked eighth among the top ten sports mascots. However, the Spurs’ furry mascot was the No. 2 overall NBA mascot, beating out the Philadelphia 76ers (No. 3) and the Orlando Magic (No. 4) mascots.
The Bulls’ Benny the Bull was the No. 1 overall mascot (and No. 1 in the NBA) in this survey across the four major sports leagues.
“However, it should be noted that the most successful mascots also use their following to share positive messages and have more personal interactions with the fans, like Benny the Bull promoting literacy to local schools and making public appearances around Chicago,” posted LSR. “This shows the extent to which sports mascots can impact their local community beyond just hyping up fans during games.”
The Coyote has won several awards throughout the years. In 2007, he was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame, and in 2014 and 2020, his fellow mascots named him Best Mascot of the Year.
The Coyote is synonymous with the Spurs and the franchise’s efforts to bring joy to its fans and the community.
For his efforts, it is no wonder he is popular with fans regardless of the sports league.
