Spurs GM Wright: ‘There are a lot of ways to build your team out’

Spurs GM Brian Wright is thrilled with draft picks Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant, citing their versatility and potential.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs General Manager Brian Wright expressed excitement following the 2025 NBA Draft, in which the team selected Dylan Harper with the second overall pick and Carter Bryant at No. 14.

“I think we’re excited that he was there… (a) little surprised,” Wright said Wednesday evening, after the first round of the draft. “It was a pleasant surprise.”

It’s not difficult to see why Wright felt that way.

Carter is a big, versatile and athletic player known for his hard-nosed defense and ability to hit the 3-point shot. Last season with Arizona, he connected on 37% from the 3-point line.

“I think he’s super versatile,” Wright said. “He’s a big wing that we think can guard four positions. He spaces the floor well. He’s a really good athlete.”

Harper represents another player who can switch into multiple positions. He averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game in his lone season at Rutgers.

“I’m just ready to get in there and make an impact any way I can with those guys,” Harper said after the Spurs selected him this week.

The roster still has a hole to fill, specifically in terms of adding more depth at the big man position and improving perimeter shooting.

Even though those areas were not addressed, Wright believes there are plenty of ways to fill out a roster outside of the draft.

“We don’t ever approach the draft and just try to fill a need, right? I think there are a lot of ways to build your team out,” he said.

Addressing those gaps was not a primary goal of the Spurs, Wright mentioned. Instead, the general manager said, their aim was to find players who can be long-term members of the team rather than an immediate fix.

“The draft is the chance that you get to add someone who you think can fit long-term.”

With the NBA free agency period set to begin, San Antonio will be poised to find players to help fill out the roster, along with enough cap space on the books.

Big men such as Brook Lopez, Clint Capela or San Antonio’s own big man free agent, Charles Bassey, provide the Spurs with pathways to bolster their roster ahead of the 2025-26 season.

“You can figure the roster out in terms of immediate fit in different ways as you go through this process,” said Wright.

San Antonio enters the offseason with a young yet highly talented team. Names like Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Harper, De’Aaron Fox, Carter, Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan dot the roster.

However, the first steps towards building a deep team began in the draft, where Wright proved that the team would not skip steps on the road back to the NBA mountaintop.

“You want to take the long-term talent,” he said.
