Spurs’ Gregg Popovich transitioning from head coach to team president, team announces

“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” said Popovich.

SAN ANTONIO — Gregg Popovich will no longer be the Spurs’ head coach, according to the team. He will be the team president moving forward.

Popovich is the NBA’s all-time winningest coach and have led the Spurs to five championships. He has been the head coach of the Silver & Black since 1996.

“While my love and passion for the game remains, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” said Popovich. “I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me.”

This follows Popovich suffering a minor stroke in November, and being away from the team ever since.

NBA insider Shams Charania says that Popovich has already been involved throughout the Spurs offseason and will “continue to be a vital member of the organization.”

Shortly following Popovich’s announcement, it was announced that Mitch Johnson is the new head coach of the Silver & Black. He took over for Popovich in November and led the Spurs to a final record of 34-48.
