SAN ANTONIO — Just as the Spurs and Grizzlies were preparing to tip off in Memphis, players quickly retreated to the sidelines and into their locker rooms while FedExForum personnel responded to a medical emergency involving a fan.

Our sister station in Memphis, WATN, reported a man sitting in the courtside area may have passed out, adding it appeared first responders were performing CPR.

The man was taken out of the arena on a stretcher after about seven minutes. There was no immediate update on his status.

“Just prior to the start of tonight’s game, a fan sitting courtside suffered a medical emergency,” the Grizzlies said in a statement. “We are sending our thoughts and prayers to the individual involved and are thankful to the first responders and medical staff who provided the necessary care.”

The game’s on-air broadcast showed a referee speaking with San Antonio acting head coach Mitch Johnson and Memphis head coach Taylor Jenkins just as the game was preparing to start around 7:10 p.m. CT. The teams left the floor shortly after.

The game eventually started around 7:50 p.m.

The Spurs (21-25) are looking to avenge a pair of January losses to the Grizzlies that saw San Antonio outscored by a combined 42 points.
