Schoening, who has never missed a Spurs game during his 24 seasons as the team’s radio play-by-play announcer, is retiring from broadcasting.
SAN ANTONIO — The longtime voice of the San Antonio Spurs is retiring after more than two decades in the business, according to a news release from the team.
Bill Schoening will retire at the end of the 2024-25 season. He will be signing off for the final time on Sunday, April 13, as the Silver & Black face off against the Toronto Raptors.
Schoening worked behind the microphone for 24 seasons at WOAI 1200 AM and never missed a Spurs game. The Toronto game will mark his 2,280 consecutive game.
“It’s difficult to walk away from a job that has provided so many fond memories and spawned many meaningful relationships, but it’s time for me step away from full time broadcasting and pursue some other interests like mentorship, volunteer work and time with family,” said Bill. “I’m thankful for my 24 seasons spent with the Spurs, calling four championships and being on hand for every game the Big Three played together. It has been an honor to describe the Spurs brand of selfless basketball, and I’ll never forget their consistent pursuit of excellence.”
According to the team, Schoening has provided Spurs fans with unforgettable calls, and commentary and has become an iconic voice in franchise history.
The Philadelphia native’s broadcasting career has spanned more than four decades. He spent 12 years at the play-by-play announcer for the University of Texas. He has called games at iconic venues such as Lambeau Field, Yankee Stadium, and the Rose Bowl. He also voiced for the NFL, MLB and arena football, according to the press release.
Given his longstanding resume, Schoening is a four-time recipient of the Associated Press “Top Texas Play-by-Play Award” and was named Texas Sportscaster of the Year in 2014. He was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2022.
“Bill’s voice has been the soundtrack to so many incredible Spurs milestones,” said Mike Kickirillo, Senior Director of Broadcasting for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. “His passion, professionalism and storytelling ability have made him a beloved figure in the Spurs community over his 2,280 consecutive games, never missing a moment. While we’ll miss his presence on the air, his legacy will always be a part of our franchise’s history.”
