Spurs reportedly have ‘exploratory interest’ in former guard Dejounte Murray

SAN ANTONIO — According to a report from Shams Charania on “Run It Back,” there is some exploratory interest from the San Antonio Spurs at trading for former guard and current Hawks player, Dejounte Murray.

“Dejounte Murray is trade eligible starting today,” he said. “One team that has a level of exploratory interest I’m told, is his former team, the San Antonio Spurs.”

Keep in mind it is reported as “exploratory interest” and nothing more. This could be the team just doing its due diligence as it should with the franchise not out of its rebuild yet.

With the Spurs lacking a point guard, outside of Tre Jones, bringing back Murray would solve this biggest hole on the roster. Pairing him with Victor Wembanyama would be a boon for the team and bring a veteran, All-Star presence.

San Antonio has plenty of assets to make a deal with Atlanta but will the team pull the trigger on a deal with the team in no rush to hurry the rebuild? Also, he is a ball-dominant player and would that be a fit with Wemby?

Also, the fanbase somewhat soured on Murray after the trade with comments the former guard made about his time in San Antonio.

Murray played for the Spurs from 2016-22 before being traded to the Hawks in 2022. His four-year, $114 million extension begins in the 2024-25 season.

He’s currently recording 20.9 points per game along with 4.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 38% shooting from the three-point line, and 1.4 steals.
