Spurs reportedly ‘positioning’ for Kings’ De’Aaron Fox; Says he’s a Manu Ginobili fan

The Spurs are reportedly watching Kings’ Fox and his future in Sacramento.

SAN ANTONIO — According to a report via The Athletic, the Sacramento Kings might be on borrowed time with All-Star De’Aaron Fox.

Sacramento has not played well and has a record below 500 (13-16). As a result, the Kings have reportedly “entered the danger zone” regarding Fox’s future with the team.

“While league sources say Fox has not asked for a trade, the former All-Star and his prominent agent are reading the room in Sacramento before deciding what comes next,” reports The Athletic.

The Athletic also reports that the San Antonio Spurs (among other teams) could emerge as a suitor for Fox should he want to leave Sacramento.

“Meanwhile, rival executives are monitoring the Fox situation closely and league sources say one team in particular — the San Antonio Spurs — is positioning itself to pursue the Houston native as a possible partner for Victor Wembanyama, should Fox become available. Barring a significant Kings turnaround, others are surely close behind.”

Fox recently declined a three-year, $165 million extension from the Kings, and his current contract ends in the summer of 2026.

Pairing Fox (27 years old) with Victor Wembanyama would be an incredible force for the Spurs, and the team can afford to add him to the roster with their financial cap flexibility.

In addition, he could see San Antonio as a chance to return to Texas.

Fox, who played high school basketball in Katy, TX, grew up a fan of franchise great Manu Ginobili, and his wife is from San Antonio, attending Johnson High School.

“San Antonio is not too far from where I grew up,” said Fox in 2019. “Manu (Ginobili) is great. I grew up in Texas, and the Spurs went to the playoffs every single year since I was born. I definitely saw a lot of Manu, and just the influence that he’s had on not only basketball in Argentina, but America, Texas, San Antonio.”

If it is true that Fox could exit Sacramento, the Spur might have competition from another Texas team.

It’s been reported that Houston could be eyeing the All-Star guard.
