SAN ANTONIO — According to a report, the San Antonio Spurs have signed swingman Lindy Waters III to a one-year deal.
Waters played 38 games with Golden State last season and averaged 5.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 17.2 minutes. With him, Spurs now have 14 players on standard contracts and have a couple of two-way spots remaining.
Waters will add much-needed three-point shooting (36.6% from the three-line for his career), but it remains an open question how much playing time he will get with Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and De’Aaron Fox ahead of him in the rotation.
SPURS THANK CHRIS PAUL
With news that guard Chris Paul is set to rejoin the Clippers next season, he sent a thank-you message to the San Antonio Spurs, saying the franchise has “such a rich history and bright future.”
“Grateful for the journey,” Paul wrote on Instagram. “Thank you to the San Antonio Spurs organization, Coach Pop, Coach Mitch, my teammates, the coaching staff, and the incredible fans for welcoming me this past season… nothing but love for the 2-1-0.”
And the Spurs returned the gesture with a thank-you message of their own for the former Spurs guard.
“Thank you, CP3, for your leadership and impact! Wishing you all the best in your return to L.A.”
It was inevitable that the Spurs would move on without the 40-year-old Paul at the guard spot, which now boasts reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, established star De’Aaron Fox, and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper.
Paul remained a professional throughout his one season with the Spurs, leaving the young players with a wealth of NBA knowledge.
Paul averaged 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game with San Antonio. More importantly, he left a significant positive footprint on the current rebuild.
Expect the Spurs to give him a fitting tribute video next season when the Clippers and Paul visit San Antonio.
