A rare Tim Duncan rookie card sells for $228,000, setting a new record for Duncan cards.
SAN ANTONIO — A 1997-98 Precious Metal Gems emerald basketball card featuring then-rookie San Antonio Spurs‘ Tim Duncan has been sold for a whopping $228,000 at auction, surpassing the previous record of $223,860 set in April 2021.
This marks the all-time price record for any Duncan card.
The card is graded at an eight, near-mint, and numbered at 66. It is part of the rare Metal Universe, Metal Gems card line. Sotheby’s Auction House even described this line of rare Duncan cards as “holy grails.”
It is no wonder that the near-mint card sold for a substantial amount.
Duncan is a Basketball Hall of Famer, and his rookie season was incredible. He averaged 21.1 points per game, 2.5 blocks, 2.7 assists, and 55% field goal shooting.
He earned an all-star nod in his rookie season and captured the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.
Basketball cards are a hot commodity right now, as fans are scooping them up by the box in the hopes of landing that one player’s card that will be worth a fortune in the future.
Among the top-selling basketball cards is Victor Wembanyama. His card has sold at auction for top dollar and upwards of thousands of dollars.
