Spurs to host ‘Win Together’ event to rally voter support for new arena

The event marks the official launch of the campaign to win voter approval of Propositions A and B this November.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs are revving up efforts to win public support for a new downtown arena before voters head to the polls in November, where they’ll approve or reject a venue tax representing Bexar County’s contribution to the project.

The team is inviting fans and residents to its “Win Together” campaign kickoff Saturday evening at Idle Beer Hall & Brewery (414 Brooklyn Ave.), where they’ll be making their pitch for why voters should approve Propositions A and B in November. Those propositions pertain to the use of tax revenue to fund $191.8 million in upgrades to the Frost Bank Center, Freeman Coliseum and San Antonio Rodeo grounds; as well as authorizing up to $311 million to help pay for a new downtown Spurs arena.

“What’s at stake is more than an arena, it’s our community’s next chapter,” said Peter J. Holt, chairman of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, in a release. “It’s about pride in who we are as a city and belief in what San Antonio can become. By harnessing tourist dollars and private investment, this plan will deliver a new downtown arena while expanding and upgrading the Frost Bank Center and Freeman Coliseum with no new taxes for local residents.”

The rally will feature guest speakers, music, Spurs Coyote, Hype Squad, photo opportunities, giveaways and more. There will be free parking and food available. RSVP here.

San Antonio City Council voted last month to approve a term sheet between the city and the Spurs. That term sheet is a non-binding document that lays out the funding framework for the arena, including the county’s $311 million contributions; the city’s contribution of up to $489 million; and the Spurs’ commitment of $500 million plus cost overruns.

The terms of that agreement, however, are contingent on voters giving the green light in November’s venue tax election. If county residents vote down the two propositions, then it will not proceed.
