SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs fans and residents who support Project Marvel are invited to a rally to encourage voting in favor of the initiative.
The Spurs will host the “Win Together” campaign rally on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Idle Beer Hall & Brewery (414 Brooklyn Ave., 78215). The event marks the official launch of the campaign to win voter approval of Propositions A and B this November. Speakers will begin at 7 p.m.
On November 4, Bexar County voters will decide on two propositions related to the use of tax revenue paid by visitors. Proposition A would approve $191.8 million for upgrades and expansions to county facilities on the east side, including the Frost Bank Center, Freeman Coliseum and San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Grounds. Proposition B would authorize up to $311 million to help pay for a new downtown arena for the Spurs.
“What’s at stake is more than an arena – it’s our community’s next chapter,” said Peter J. Holt, Managing Partner of the San Antonio Spurs, in a release. “It’s about pride in who we are as a city and belief in what San Antonio can become. By harnessing tourist dollars and private investment, this plan will deliver a new downtown arena while expanding and upgrading the Frost Bank Center and Freeman Coliseum with no new taxes for local residents.”
The rally will feature guest speakers, music, Spurs Coyote, Hype Squad, photo opportunities, giveaways and more. There will be free parking and food available. RSVP here.
The Spurs have publicly stated that the organization is contributing $500 million directly toward arena costs and will cover 100% of any cost overruns.
Project Marvel has been hotly debated among county residents, with some in favor and others opposed.
Recently, the City Council voted to pass (7-4) a resolution to proceed with the Spurs term sheet (non-binding) to begin initial talks. However, if county residents vote down two propositions related to the use of tax revenue paid by visitors for the project, then it will not proceed.
