New basketball courts are coming to the French city where Wemby started his basketball journey.
SAN ANTONIO — Two new basketball courts are coming to France thanks to the San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs center and the team helped fund the new courts in Chesnay-Rocquencourt, the city he grew up in. They will open on January 21.
According to the French site BFM, the Spurs helped pay for 80% of the courts, with Wemby doing his part to help initiate the project.
Wembnayama and Spurs representatives will attend the opening when the Spurs visit Paris for their upcoming games in January when they face the Pacers.
“When it’s sponsored by someone well-known, it brings in more people,” posted BFM. “Someone from the city is behind a project like this and who believes that the initiative is beneficial for everyone.”
The estimated cost of the courts is 500,000 Euros ($510,075.00 United States dollars).
“We are very interested that he [Wembnayama] shows this attachment to the city, but that we can also carry out projects with him that have a sporting and educational dimension. I hope that we will do more with him,” said the city’s mayor Richard Delepierre.
Wembanyama started his basketball career in Nanterre after playing as a child with the Entente Le Chesnay Versailles 78 club between 2011 and 2014.
Closer to home, Wemby and the Spurs do many community outreach events to help San Antonio.
From Wemby dressing up as Santa Claus to hand out gifts during the holiday season to the team serving Thanksgiving dinner, both are always willing to do their part to help the local community.
