Spurs win sparks celebrations — and chaos — across San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO — A Spurs playoff win sparked celebrations across San Antonio Monday night — but in some parts of the city, the excitement quickly turned chaotic.

After the Silver and Black defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder, fans flooded streets across the city, including longtime celebration hotspot Southwest Military Drive and East Commerce Street downtown.

Thunder rolled in Oklahoma City on the court Monday night, but the noise didn’t stop when the final buzzer sounded.

Videos shared with KENS 5 show crowds gathering along Southwest Military Drive, with some fans standing on top of moving vehicles while others recorded the celebrations nearby.

“The ones that are standing on the vehicles, they made me so nervous,” said Spurs fan Annel Pulido.

Pulido captured video of the celebration as the atmosphere intensified.

“And when this happened, it was so scary,” she said.

In another moment caught on camera, someone fell off a moving truck.

“He hit his head pretty bad,” she said. “He looked way out of it.”

But Southwest Military Drive wasn’t the only area where things were popping off after the Spurs win.

Video from East Commerce Street showed kids hanging out of car windows while drivers honked and crowds packed the roadway following the playoff victory.

Despite the large crowds and chaotic scenes, San Antonio police said no arrests were made at either location Monday night.

KENS 5 also received a statement from Spurs Sports & Entertainment urging fans to celebrate responsibly.

“Thank you for being the best fans in the NBA. Let’s celebrate safe, respect our city and each other, and show up for the silver & black the right way. Por Vida!”
