Stamp Out Hunger food drive kicks off in San Antonio with 500,000 pound goal

Letter carriers and community partners aim to collect a record amount of food in one day.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio is gearing up to tackle hunger in a big way.

The National Association of Letter Carriers Alamo Branch 421 is launching its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive with a goal of collecting 500,000 pounds of food in a single day — the largest one-day total in the city.

The kickoff press conference will be held Friday, May 1 at the San Antonio Food Bank, where organizers will call on residents to donate at least one pound of nonperishable food.

The food drive, supported by CPS Energy, benefits families across the region facing food insecurity.

Now in its 34th year locally, the effort is part of a nationwide campaign that has collected more than 2 billion pounds of food.

The main event takes place Saturday, May 9, when letter carriers will pick up donations directly from mailboxes along their routes.

Organizers say every dollar donated can provide up to 10 pounds of food, and virtual donations are also available.

Bottom line: one bag can make a big difference.
