Steve Kerr admits Warriors will not be able to compete with the Spurs, Thunder for NBA titles soon

Warriors’ Steve Kerr concedes Golden State’s era is fading as the looming rivalry between Spurs and Thunder heats up.

SAN ANTONIO — The outlook for the San Antonio Spurs climbing back to the top of the NBA is bright.

After a six-year playoff drought and the final march to the title in 2014, it appears the Spurs will be challenging for NBA titles sooner rather than later with a talented roster with Victor Wembanyama as the centerpiece.

That outlook is not the same for the Warriors.

With an aging roster and financial situations to deal with, Golden State’s glory days are winding down.

And former Spurs guard and current Warriors coach Steve Kerr can see the writing on the wall.

Speaking with the “Tom Tolbert Show,” Kerr admits his team will not be able to compete with the Spurs and Thunder for titles in the near future.

“I just don’t want anybody to think that we’re all delusional and thinking we should be competing for titles year in and year out with San Antonio and Oklahoma City the next few years,” he said.

It is a part of pro-sports life. All dynasties fade eventually. The same happened to the Spurs after 2014: like the Warriors, they had an aging team, had seen key players depart (Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili), and a rebuild was on the horizon.

As for the Spurs and Thunder, they are teams on the rise, with Oklahoma City already capturing a title in 2025.

These two teams are destined to become West rivals, with either team likely representing the Western Conference in the NBA Finals.

Both the Spurs and Thunder boast a young, talented, and deep roster, as well as young coaches in Mitch Johnson and Mark Daigneault.

This season, Spurs-Thunder games have been appointment television, with the Spurs up 3-0 in the regular-season series, and for one of the league’s best coaches to admit his team will not be able to compete with the two teams is a huge endorsement.
