COMAL COUNTY, Texas — Authorities have released new details in the investigation of a shooting at Hill Country College Preparatory High School, saying a 15-year-old student used a revolver he brought from home to shoot a teacher and himself.
Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds said Tuesday that investigators have confirmed the student used a .357 revolver in the shooting, which occurred Monday. Officials have not said who owns the gun.
Reynolds said two of the student’s family members – his father and grandfather have been interviewed by the Texas Rangers and have been cooperative with investigators.
“We most certainly will keep the District Attorney’s office involved,” Reynolds said, indicating that charges could still be possible as the investigation continues.
The teacher who was shot at the school remains hospitalized. Authorities have not released her identity out of respect for her and her family.
Investigators are still working to determine a motive. Reynolds said information gathered from school staff suggests the student may have been experiencing academic difficulties, including failing several classes, though he emphasized that remains part of the ongoing investigation.
Detectives have executed a search warrant at the student’s home and seized several electronic devices. Those items are now undergoing forensic examination as authorities work to better understand what led to the shooting.
“I’m sure yesterday was also traumatic for the shooter’s parents,” Reynolds said. “It’s a lot to absorb and take in, but we want to make sure what we’re collecting evidentiary-wise, we owe it to the victim to make sure we’re thorough.”
The investigation remains active.
