Students in SAISD head back to school Tuesday

For hundreds of students and teachers, it will be a year of change.

San Antonio ISD heads back to school Tuesday morning, and for hundreds of teacher and students, it will be a year of change.

This is the first school year following the district’s rightsizing plan. The school board voted last fall to close 15 schools and four facilities for good.

The district says the move was made to deal with declining enrollment and limited resources.

Many students, teachers and staff have now relocated to different schools for the new year.

SAISD has now begun holding meetings, wanting public input as they decide how to repurpose the now dormant buildings.

One of the schools in the district is the Young Men’s Leadership Academy, located near I-35 on the east side of town.

It is the first all-boys public school, serving grades 5 through 12.

The district says this school offers a model of education that is backed by research indicating that boys and girls learn differently in the classroom.

This school puts on emphasis on learning, and most recently college preparedness.

Since their first graduation in 2022, the Young Men’s Leadership Academy has increased their college attendance rate to 95% of students, which is fantastic.

Principal Derrick Brown says they have a special anniversary happening on campus this year.

As for the district, Superintendent Jaime Aquino sent us this statement about the first day:

“We are looking forward to a great new academic school year! Campuses and staff across the district have been actively preparing for the arrival of our scholars. Educators have engaged in impactful professional learning experiences designed to enhance their teaching strategies and enhance their understanding of student needs. In addition to professional development, staff have participated in team-building activities aimed at fostering collaboration, trust, and a strong sense of community among colleagues.”
